Well thank you Steve Balmer. Why in the hell did Gates left him in charge I never will understand.

    While Steve Jobs is great.

See you have two kinds of Steves, one is an idiot and other one is highly intelligent. :D

And from this post one can venture a guess as to which kind you are.

You have to link to the images, not the flickr page.

And that's just the U2 special edition iPod.

    Got it...

Does this mean we will see a resolution downgrade to that of the 13 macbook pro's?

Im sure it will be a net plus

"One reliable MacRumors.com source has provided a more detailed description of one of the prototypes for the upcoming Apple Phone. The description has yielded this artist's rendition of the phone. (Click image for larger view). The phone offers a familiar look to iPod owners, with the preservation of the iPod click-wheel.

The click-wheel is closer to the bottom of the device with the screen taking a vertical orientation. The click-wheel portion of the device reportedly slides down to reveal a traditional numeric dial-pad underneath. The front is black, while the back is chrome like the current iPod."

Basically someone said "it will look like nano but with a bigger screen, and the scroll wheel slides down for the keyboard," then macrumors had some one do a mock up of it. (A poor one at that, shouldn't there be a discernable gap between the part that slides down, and the part that doesnt)

Is it just me or does the scroll wheel sliding down seem backwards? The revealed keypad would be recessed and in the middle of the phone, sounds awkward, and unattractive. Also would we not consistently hit buttons/scrolling on the scroll wheel while dialing a number?

I thought this was an FCC mandate (to track GPS information for cellphones) after 9/11.

Not the date 9/11. Location is mandated for E911, the emergency call number.

However, in ATT's case, that location is determined on the carrier side alone, not by way of the phone itself as is done on say, Verizon.

Agree to that, but why is it being collected without permission?

If it's not sent anywhere, then it's almost certainly a simple programmer screwup, leaving in test code.

The data is actually collected by cell tower triangulation, not GPS.

To use the cell method (and I doubt it's triangulation - but that's a different topic), the cell id must be sent to Apple's location server, which then returns the computed general center of that cell, which is in an area about 1/3 of the tower's coverage.

The claim is that no data is going back and forth while the location is being collected, which makes no sense unless every iPhone has a huge cell database stored or cached internally. (Possible.)

You gave it permission. Location Services is enabled on your phone, and apps that require the data ask your permission, and almost any system level service keep logs.

Fair enough. I don't know what's the big deal.

    Hmm. A few thoughts.

First, the "candybar" reference you make is quite apt: this looks a lot like the LG Chocolate. Which, of course, was designed to look like an iPod, so duh. But, I foresee market confusion. At least the buttons here will have some response to them (I hope!).

Second, I'm not sure about the slide-out idea. I like the idea on many cell phones as a way to keep buttons from being pressed accidentally, but greatly prefer Apple's iPod "Hold" switch over a physical drawer or "key lock" mechanism. With the music buttons so exposed, seems we'd still need a "hold", and it'd be silly for that to only apply to half the device. More, though, I worry about how flimsy the device will feel with the scroll wheel "slid out". Granted, that seems infinitely better ergonomics than the keyboard itself sliding out (can slide open and dial with one hand in one smooth movement without re-adjusting phone in hand). But, still, I worry about the likelihood of the wheel "drawer" snapping off. I hate to see iPods in such pain!

Third, what about cases? My cell phones without cases always end up looking like crap. I wouldn't want a nice shiny black iPhone to be all beaten up a week after I got it. How would a case work with a slide-out drawer? Are we stuck using socks?

I'm assuming that the non-numeric controls (answer the phone, hang up, you know, the little not-so-important functions) are also in the drawer. Does that make sense for answering the phone while on the go?

Finally: size? I know, most of the world doesn't have American-size Big Mac fingers. Still, I can't imagine using a keypad small enough (both width/height and depth) to fit under the scroll wheel of a nano. If you make it that small, the buttons have to be really bulby and stiff (see Treo); otherwise you just hit the wrong one too often.

I think that the phone interface won't have a click-wheel. Rather, it will be all screen with an on-screen wheel changing to an on-screen keypad. No slider action whatsoever. Maybe a hard switch for on/off, answer, and phonebook, but that's about all I'd put on the phone. It'll save on cost and hardware complexity too, not having to include a wheel.

Interface? Regular phone ... may be a smartphone if they figure out how to do the keyboard. Input is always questionable on small devices because there isn't room. Bluetooth perhaps? That's more $ down the drain for a keyboard :(

I hope I have the funds to buy one when one of these suckers comes out. Both GSM and CDMA would be better, but if there's only one, it should be GSM. It's easier for people to switch their phones that way, instead of having the cellphone stores cluttered up.

Good thing my sister's RAZR is dying ... maybe I'll tell her to get someone else's phone (on the cheap) when these drop (if she doesn't have enough for an Apple phone).

Already I hear people grumbling that downloading these sub-DVD quality movies taking couple of hours even with high speed cable connections. HD quality would be about 6-8 times larger in file size and could take a day to download. Not sure if we are there yet...in terms of bandwidth.
Where do you get 6-8x 720p has only 3x the resolution and 1080i is just slightly higher than that. Only 1080p is 6-8x the raw resolution, but compression tends to work better if you give it more data to work with so birtates do not scale linearly with the number of pixels, and it can often be closer to a square root, so 720p might only be 2x as long as current movies with 1080p 3-4x.

Smartphones will be obsolete by 2015. Telepathy is the future of telecommunications :p :DYou're being sarcastic of course, but telecommunication behind the ear chip implants by 2020-25, and the full "Borg experience" 10-15 years after that (which if Apple's the leader would make us "iBorgs," now that's an actually possible real story.

(Implanted phones were predicted, btw, in a '60's James Coburn action/spy movie "The President's Analyst." Now THAT's a long-term projection....)

Really, though $100 million isn't all that significant to a company with reserves like Apple has, vs. having a possible patent infringement hanging over them that could, given a ruling against them, cost much more.

One part supplier gone, another one pops up.

Samsung can't afford to lose customers the likes of Apple.

Regardless, this suit has nothing to do with Samsung's supply agreements with Apple. Bridges won't be burned, Samsung won't breach their contracts, and the sky won't fall.

It's just business. And yes, a lot of entities are guilty of ripping off Apple's work. It's almost a favorite pastime in the industry. Apple has the wherewithal to go after whomever the wish without fear of losing customers, partners, or suppliers. Yeah, they are *that* secure, folks. Welcome to 2011 and the beginning of a massive growth phase for Apple driven by insane customer demand.

Apple still doesn't have upload to a cloud or wireless syncing, and Windows Phone does. 25 GB free sky drive, as well as a beautiful hub where you choose what to access at a glance. In iOS, you have to flick and flick, especially if you have many apps. The wireless syncing is slick. Facebook integration flawless. WP7 also now has cut, copy, and paste and HTML5 before the end of the year. I'm sorry, but hooking up with the largest mobile phone manufacture is a no brainer.

Very sad. Someone lost their life over something so trivial. And said that the guard has to live with knowing he took a life. :(

Sad indeed. Sympathies to the guard, who at least is alive to know what happened; if he hadn't done it, odds are too high that he wouldn't be.

What does this mean for the long-rumored widescreen ipod? Are they saving the new samsung 120gig drives for that? Will they wait until the hype dies down then hit it hard with the new 6g ipod like last year? Personally I like the updates, better battery, brighter screen, gapless playback(!), more storage. I just don't want to buy this and then have an uber ipod out in a month's time...Keep Your Powder Dry. It's coming. When we don't know. But no doubt on the way.

Just like all of the netbooks with optical drives make the MBA look bad?

Netbooks do not have optical drives. Ultraportables do.

The MBA looks good as a netbook. It looks bad as an ultraportable.

MBA and MBP are two different markets.

MBA is for people that want light. MBP is for people that want a full featured notebook.

So you want a big MBA.

If they could have the same processors, that would happen already at 13".
