andrew belle; the ladder

I've talked about my love for Civil Wars and when I was searching iTunes the other day for similar artists I came across Andrew Belle...and then my heart sank. His title song, The Ladder keeps playing like a jukebox in my head "woe is me, faithless you and selfish me..." which sounds sad right there, but promise his stuff is good! I'm also mesmerized by the softness in his voice, that folkness I crave!

Check him out if your into: folk, Civil Wars, new artists, singer/songwriter

florence and the machine

Haven't done an Artist of the week post in awhile, so thought I would share one with you today.
Florence and the Machines is the pick this week and I'll admit I want to listen to more of her stuff, I just have "The Dogs Days are Over" stuck in my head...

I also want to know if there are any new artists out there I need to know about! Please share!

rembrandt van rijn

Normally I don't understand a thing that's going on in my history of printmaking class. It's really not that boooooooring, I just get A.D.D and start sketching trees all over my notes. Or I'll jump in every once in awhile to gain participation points.

But as we've learned about Rembrandt being an etcher and his connections from printmaking before/after photography, I'm continuously drawn to his "sketchy-likeness" and way of handling the prints (leaving marks, drawing us into the center).

I love whats going on in this top print. The beggars approaching this man and he humbling gives them change so that they may be provided. This is how Christ approaches us daily.

I would hang this in my home because I'm obsessed with the silhouette of trees. Again, Rembrandt has left the diagonal sharp lines on the side purposefully because that's what he wanted to achieve in his works.

Who's your artist of the week?

SERYN

this is my late post for artist of the week, so i apologize because i got caught up in loving Cali and posting pictures. but i am so thankful i discovered this group of artists who not only rock, but are a Denton group! (yay Denton music!) the melody of their voices and instruments combined with passion creates an emotional feeling in their songs. i saw them live last week and want to see them every week now if i could travel with them.

they look so Denton, don't they?

genre: hip-hop/rap

About 75% of the time Buddy (yes I named my car) is blaring rap music going through the streets of Denton. What I love about hip-hop are the lyrics, beats, rhythm and sound. It makes me want to dance and gives me tons of inspiration for approaching art. And while I don't agree with many of the lyrics Nicki, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne present, they are still talented. They were given a gift.

Lecrae I discovered a few years ago by friends and had never heard a rapper sing about Jesus! With beats! It was a new discovery! Same with Tedashii who I found out goes to The Village as well, just a different campus!

So the image below is my collection of artist(s) of the week!

Spring Break is so soon!
I'm ready for Cali!

rene gruau; fashion illustration

I'm focusing on a different kind of artist for the week: fashion illustration.
At the beginning of the week I got drawn to these illustrations by Rene Gruau, who has a keen eyesight for what he's trying to accomplish. For me, he immediately grabbed my attention by the limited color palette, soft curves and simplicity.

love this print

david crowder band

This week I haven't been playing much music except during my car rides. I'm not the type of person that listens to their iPod through campus and hardly when I'm at home. But during my flight back to Texas I had David Crowder playing multiple times. Not only am I drawn to the lyrics, but it always inspires me for a painting.

Thanks guys for creating music!

drew and ellie holcomb; chasing someday

On Thursdays (hopefully) I will post my artist(s) of the week so you can expand your music library. Shoot me artist as well, I'm always on the search for amazing voices.

This week goes to: Drew & Ellie Holcomb who I saw a couple of months ago with some sweet ladies. Their energy for the crowd and most importantly, each other, is contagious. You can see their love for one another through the lyrics and songs. Their new CD just released this week, BUY IT! Worth your bucks!

Another singer/songwriter duo I listen to on a weekly basis!

civil wars; barton hollow

music of the week:
The Civil Wars: Barton Hollow

Heard about this duo about a year and a half ago when a friend was playing their EP cd in the car and I told him to replay it atleast 5 times. I even made him be quiet so I could listen to the words (I hardly do with music, I'll just be honest). It was peaceful, their lyrics are sensational.

Through these snow days this is what I'm listening to, over and over and over.
